So much about John is enigmatic. His FamilySearch ID is LV5K-7Y6. I am fairly certain he was born about 1951 in the Kleindeutschland area of the lower East Side (Manhattan) from German immigrant parents, but in 1876 he applied for naturalization. The address is the same one in the record of his first marriage to Christine Seiler.

John shows up twice in the 1870 census, first with his parents Ehrhardt and Anna in June and later in December with (I assume) an uncle and an aunt, Daniel and Dora. Both times it says he was born in New York. (Actually it is possible his mother died in 1867 and his father remarried a woman with the same given name. But Anna Haas was not a unique name in this area.)

John's marriage in 1876 says he was born in Germany and it seemed to be a phase where he claimed this. Later he dropped about 11 years off of his age, claimed he was born in 1862 and listed New York as his birth place. One wonders if it is the same person, but there are constant associations in the records - his parents Ehrhardt and Anna Haas, his brother George, the daughter from his second marriage (Lizzie).

Elizabeth was born out of wedlock by five years with his future second wife. The second marriage record says it was his first marriage even though the parents are the same in both marriage records. I don't know if he was divorced at the time.

When Carrie, the wife of brother George applied for a passport in 1924 she wrote the name George Weisbart and then caret-ed the name "John".

One idea I haven't really explored yet is that John 1851 died and the youngest child who was named Nathan or perhaps Janatz took the name John at some point. If this were the case, it is possible the elder John was born in Germany and married Christine and Janatz was born in New York and married Elizabeth. I'm not sure how I could test this theory.

I am keen for more information and insights about him.
