Biography
James Welch was born in England.
James Read was born on 14 May 1839 at Buckland, Kent, England[1] and baptised on 30 June at St Andrew, Buckland[2]. He was the son of William Welch and Ann Read.
James Welch migrated from England to New Zealand.
A few months later he emigrated with his parents[3] and six siblings on the Oriental, the first of the Wakefield ships to leave England on 15 September 1839. They arrived on 31 January 1840 at Port Nicholson, New Zealand.
He grew up in what became Lower Hutt and Petone[1]. In his late teens, he made several trips to the Wairarapa via Lake Ferry to help take cattle there.
He married Isabella Harper on 14 October 1862[4]. They had seven children.
He moved to the Wairarapa soon after his marriage[1], taking up farming under the small farms scheme. He settled at Opaki where in 1868 he was recorded on the Wairarapa West Electoral Roll as having freehold land of 56 acres at Opaki Plains and 38 acres near Masterton[5]. He was "a good judge of stock and a keen practical farmer"[1].
In 1896 he, his wife and several children were living at Opaki, all being on the Masterton Electoral Roll[6]. He was a sheep-farmer owning 356 acres of freehold land.
He became blind for the last seven years of his life[1]. His wife died on 19 August 1928[7]. In 1931 he was still living at 15 Opaki Road, Wairarapa, being registered on the Masterton General Electoral Roll as retired[8].
James died on 8 June 1933 aged 94 years[9] at Landsdowne, Masterton. He was buried in Archer Street Cemetery, Masterton[10]. His obituary said of him:
"The late Mr Welch was of a retiring disposition, taking little part in public matters, and always avoiding anything In the nature of publicity. Nevertheless, he was a man of strong and decided views, and was never afraid to speak his mind."
His probate was granted at Masterton[11]. As his wife had predeceased him, he left legacies to his children. His property was sold by public auction[12].
