Biography

Joshua Welch was born in the Colony of Nova Scotia.

Joshua married Emeline Knowlton in Cumberland County (possibly Fraserville), Nova Scotia on May 31, 1882[1].

At the time of the 1901 Canada Census, Joshua, Emeline, Minnie, Maud, Maggies, Roxie, Lottie, Marley, Clara, Mabel, and Frank Welch were listed as living in Port Greville, Nova Scotia, along John Eccles, who was listed as an adopted son[2]. At the time of the census, Joshua's occupation was listed as "Labourer".

At the time of the 1921 Canada Census, Joshua, Emeline, Mabel, and Frank Welch (transcribed as "Welsh") were listed as living in Port Greville, Nova Scotia, along with Joshua and Emeline's widowed daughter Clara Hughes, Clara's children Elizabeth and Gerald Hughes, and a boarder[3]. At the time of the census, Joshua was listed as working in a sawmill.

Notes

Joshua's date of birth is unclear. At the time of his marriage to Emeline in 1882, his age was listed as 26, which would place his birth in approximately 1856. In the 1901 census, his date of birth was enumerated as September 7, 1844 (or possibly 1849: the scan is unclear), but his age looks like it says "46", which would place his birth in approximately 1855. But the last digit also looks like it's been overwritten. It may have originally said 40 (which would place his birth in approximately 1861) or 48 (which would place his birth in approximately 1853). It's also possible that the strong vertical stroke is meant to correct his age to 41, which would place his birth in approximately 1860. But none of those dates match either 1844 or 1849. In the 1921 census, his age is listed as 67, which would place his birth in approximately 1854.
