Samuel married Harriet Morey at Spring Bay in 15 Jun 1871. She was 23 and he was 22[1] His wife died "June 8, 1920, at Hobart, Harriett, the dearly beloved wife of Samuel Nicholas Wellard, in her 73rd year."[2]
Samuel Nicholas Wellard was a breeder of Purebred sheep and he was responsible for introducing Shropshire sheep into Tasmania in 1896. He was a member of the Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania for 17 years. Their main aim was to organise the annual Royal Agricultural Show at Elwick. [3], [4] "The Shropshire ram Royalist, bred and owned by Mr. Samuel N. Wellard, of Forcett House, Forcett. which was awarded the first and champion prize at the last Hobart show. first prize for the best ram under 15 months at the Royal Show Melbourne and second prize for the best ram under 15 months at Campbell Town. has Just been shorn. The fleece weighed 15 pounds"[5]
His will says he died on the (2)3rd August 1934, Bellerive, Tasmania. It mentions a niece Annie Wellard, daughter of his brother Walter William Wellard.[6]
He died "August 23, 1934, at his residence, Kooringal, Bayfield Street, Bellerive, Samuel Nicholas, loved hus- band of the late Harriet Wellard, In his 86th year. Late of Forcett House, Forcett"[7]
