Samuel Wells a Marion County pioneer who had spent practically 59 years in Knoxville, Polk and Lake Prairie Townships, died at his home in Pella on Friday morning, June 20, 1913, aged 78 years, 6 months, 15 days.

Death resulted from heart troubles and other ailments incident to old age.

Samuel Wells was born in Brown County, Ohio, December 5, 1834, and came to Marion County when scarcely 21 years of age, about the year 1855 and settled in Knoxville Township. After a short residence here he returned to Ohio and was there united in marriage with Miss Lucinda Derry. The young people then came to this section for permanent residence. Lucinda Derry Wells died about thirty years ago. To her marriage with Samuel Wells there are four surviving children, as follows: Rachel, widow of the late James Crozier; Geo. S. Wells, James Wells, and Samuel Wells, Jr. And another of the brothers, Al, has been absent a number of years and it is not known if he is still living.

Some years after the death of his first wife, Samuel Wells was united in marriage with Ozanna Miller. She still survives.

Mr. Wells was a good citizen, industrious, honest and well respected by all, one whose memory will long be cherished by many outside of his circle of relatives. The funeral services were held at Coal Ridge Church at 10 o'clock Sunday morning, conducted by Rev. Bailey, of Pella. Burial was in the cemetery two miles north of Knoxville.
