Biography

Alfred Wells was born in the Colony of Victoria (1851-1900)

Alfred Henry Wells was born in 1865 in Victoria. He was the eldest child of twelve born to Alfred Wells and Mahala Walden. His birth was registered in ‘WOOD’ which could be any of eight locations. It is conjectured that it is probably Woodvale, just north of Bendigo. [1]

Alfred married Elizabeth Chappell in 1889, at the home of Elizabeth’s parents, 2 Fishley Street, South Melbourne. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1939. [2]

Although Alfred’s and Elizabeth’s parents lived in Victoria at the time of their wedding, both families moved to Western Australia around the turn of the century.

Alfred and Elizabeth also moved to Western Australia at a similar time.

They had five children: Alfred James (1890); Myrtle Daisy (1892); Violet Hilda May (1894); Beatrice Ivy (1900); and William John (1904). The first three were born in Victoria; the youngest two in Western Australia.

Alfred passed away at his home in Bayswater in 1943, aged 78. [3] [4] He is buried in Karrakatta cemetery near Perth, with many others of his family. [5]

At the time of his passing, the following tribute was published in the newspaper:

WELLS — A tribute to the memory of Mr. Alfred Henry Wells, who lived a life of sacrifice for the benefit of others. One of the foundation members of the Shop Assistants' Union. Inserted by W. J. Rowe (Mt. Lawley).[6]
