The information for this page was kindly supplied by Carol Mitchell.

Henry Wells desserted his wife in New Zealand, leaving her to raise a large family alone. She worked as a mid-wife in Onehunga, where she was well known to the FLETCHER family, who lived closeby.

While Henry remarried in Australia, this marriage was within the law as he had left 7 years of ocean between the marriages.

I wonder if he ever meet the children from his first marriage? It is possbile, because during World War One, his sons would have been in Sydney?

Greetings Fellow Researchers,

I am a descendent of Henry Eastthrupp Wells via his second marriage, in Australia, to Barbara Brignull.

The Eastthrupp (Easthrupp/ Eastrupp/ East Thrupp) middle name has long intrigued me... Variations have been applied to several of Henry's descendents in New Zealand and Australia and newspaper funeral notices also indicate it was used to name a couple of Wells dwellings in Joseph St Ashfield (Sydney).

The particular combination of "East" and "Thrupp" is most tantalising - I have only found it in one other family originating from a Henry East Thrupp born in the 1770s - his parents Robert Thrupp and Mary East were married 12/8/1770 at St James Westminster. There are numerous genealogical references online to the Thrupp family and the thing that strikes me is their prominence as coach builders in London - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thrupp_%26_Maberly

Our Wells forebears were also coach smiths and coach trimmers and it seems an extraordinary coincidence that we have picked up a name which was otherwise the exclusive preserve of the coach building Thrupps without there being some connection! It may be that our Stephen Wells was a very close associate of Henry Thrupp and chose to honour him by incorporating the "East/Thrupp" name into his own family. Or could the connection be more substantial??

It is a genealogical ambition of mine to tease this mystery out if possible and I would welcome any suggestions you may have.
