Biography

Grew up on his father's farms in Pennsylvania and Maryland. He was a slave owner, as there are two bills of sale for the early 1820's, when he sold his "possessions" and moved to Fairfield County, Ohio.

"In 1831, disturbed because his sons were associating too much with their cousins whose fathers operated distilleries and wishing to remove his sons from easy access to liquor, he moved to Ross County, Ohio, and lived near South Salem and Greenfield." p. 35

He bought land in Indiana to provide farms for his sons. He is said to have brought the first cookstove to Ross County.

"He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church at South Salem where he purchased a pew which was used for many years by his descendants. He is said to have had a good singing voice and often conducted 'singing schools'. Also he had a reputation as a conversationalist; some one said of him that he could talk for twenty-four hours without stopping. Jennier Parrett told me that an old [African-American] man often spoke of him saying: "Old Philip - ugliest man I ever knew, but he was awful good." Perhaps his greatest honor comes from the fact that he reared nine fine sons of whom it is said none smoked, used tobacco in any form, or drank alcoholic beverages." p. 36

Buried in the churchyard of the Presbyterian Church in South Salem, Ohio.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Philip by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Philip:
