Ross Valdar Wheatley OBE was born on 19th December 1900 at Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. He was the son of Frederick William Wheatley and Alice Ruth unknown.[1]
He entered the Naval College on 31st December 1913,[2] graduating as a Midshipman on 1st January 1919.[3]
He married Frances Blaxland in 1927 at Woollahra, New South Wales.[4]

Ross was appointed captain of HMAS Moresby on 11th April 1935.[5] During the Second World War, he was Naval Officer in Charge (NOIC) Townsville.[6] In June 1950, he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).[7]
He retired from the Royal Australian Navy on 31st December 1953 as a Commander; following a strong career of forty years.[2] He had been appointed Acting Captain in 1944.[3]
Ross passed away, aged 65 years, in 1966 in Sydney's northern suburbs, New South Wales.[8]
