Ira was born in 4[1] Jul 1842[2] in Salem, Marion,[1] Illinois, United States. He was the son of Josiah Wheeler and Jerusha Birge Wheeler.[2][3]

In 1850 Ira was living in Grant, Wisconsin with his father and mother and 2 brothers. [4]

In 1860 U.S. census, Ira was living in Fennimore, Grant, Wisconsin with his father, mother and 3 siblings. [5]

Ira was a Civil War veteran. He served the Union Army as a Private and then Corporal in Company B, 33rd Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry.[6]He enlisted 14 Aug 1862 as Private and mustered out 9 Aug 1865 as Corporal.[1][7]

On Aug. 28, 1862, Ira married Lucy A. Smith in Fennimore, Grant, Wisconsin, United States. [3]

In 1870 Ira is a farmer, living in Monona, Clayton, Iowa with his wife, Lucy A. and daughter, Luona A. [8]

In 1880 Ira and Lucy are schoolteachers, living in Luana, Clayton, Iowa. Daughter Luona is also in the household. [9]

In 1900 Ira and his wife Lucy are on the staff of the School for the Feeble Minded in Faribault, Rice, Minnesota, United States. Ira is a store clerk and Lucy is a physician. They had been married for 37 years. Lucy was the mother of 2 children, 1 is still living. [10]

Ira moved to Pasadena, California, United States in about 1904[11] and was a member of Pasadena, California’s John F. Godfrey Post of the G.A.R.

His wife Lucy received a Veterans Administration widow's pension upon his death. Ira's disability was described as disabilities with his legs, total disability of right foot, and others.[12]

He passed away on 19 Jan 1910[2][11] in Pasadena, California, United States [11] and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum in Altadena, California.[2][11]
