Ellen Whitaker was born in about 1838 in St Helens, Lancashire. She was the daughter of James Whitaker and Ann (Sharples) Whitaker.

By June 6th 1841, they were living in Church Street, Eccleston. Ellen's father was a book keeper. The household also included a female servant Mary Sparks, a male servant Peter Sparks, and 22-year-old Sarah Hartley for whom no occupation was listed.

Ellen's mother died in 1841 aged 31 in Prescot district. Her father married Ann (Ryland) Owen in 1842, in a registrar-attended ceremony in Prescot district.
On the night of March 30th 1851, Ellen and her elder sister Jane were visitors in the household of joiner & builder John Lawrenson and family in Duke Street, Windle. Both girls were scholars.

Ellen died on 22 Aug 1852 in Prescot district, aged 14. She was buried at St Anne's Church in Sutton (Catholic).
