Notes
Nicholas probably did not meet Susanna Humphrey until after arriving in New England and settling in Dorchester, Massachusetts, where he was made a freeman on 10 May 1643. In 1647 he bought a tract of land in that part of Dorchester that was later called Milton, Massachusetts, from Henry Wolcott of Windsor, Connecticut, but after building a house on the land there was a dispute as to the title and so he sued Wolcott on his Warranty and obtained judgment.
He became one of the founding proprietors of the iron bloomery in Taunton, Massachusetts, and moved to Taunton with his family by spring, 1655. He probably located near Scaddings Pond. He soon became the owner of a quarter of a saw mill situated on the Mill River, but the exact location is not known. Some of the residents of the area complained against the saw mill owners in an action in Plymouth Court for the mill having stopped the fish from the run up the stream to the ponds above. The jury found for the plaintiffs and the saw mill owners made a pssage way so that the herring could resume their accustomed visits to the ponds.
Nicholas White was not a prominent figure in church or public affairs in Taunton, but was involved in a number of land transactions including a brief part-ownership of Block Island. In addition to his land purchases, the record shows that he was also fined for a couple of indiscretions.
He was intestate when he died in in Taunton in 1697. His estate was administered by his son Nicholas White. The inventory was about 300 pounds. His estate was divided between his three sons and his daughter Elizabeth. Five small children were mentioned in his 1656 petition to the General Court, so one child apparently died young.
