Note NI0011[]
His grandkids remember one of Harry's favorite sayings was never go to bed on an empty stomach.
Harry was born in Waynesville, North Carolina. When Harry was eight years old he and a friend known in later life as Captain Swift used to pump the organ at the Presbyterian Church in Waynesville, North Carolina. They would sneak out when they could and eat Gooseberries at Mrs. Cooper's. At this age the boys still wore dresses. Harry's mother made a sign once that said Harry was a straight throwere who could kill rabbits in one throw. They also enjoyed shooting at the "Niggers" when they tried to steal the watermelons from the watermelon patch. Harry went to school and learned the plumbing and heating trade.
Harry came to Ledyard, New York in 1911. The trip here was an adventure. The family bought a 1911 Model F chain drive Buick with two cylinders and gas headlights. At that time there were only three cars in Waynesville. They made 40 miles the first day and tented in front of a rich woman's mansion near Ashville, NC. Two men came with guns and told them they couldn't stay there because a " desparate Nigger man murderer" was holed up in a cave nearby and they didn't know what might happen. Harry and Ray stood guard all night long.
They came to Rocky Mountain, North Carolina and stopped at a little store. A gang crowded around them to see the car because they hadn't seen one before. They had a U.S. knapsack of pans and cooking utensils and a shotgun on the back of the car. One of the gang said " this must be a government outfit" which "tickled them pink".
The next night in Roanoke, Virginia a bearing burnt out and they spent all night fixing it. Harry bought a mechanic in a machine shop 12 cans of beer to kep him working onmaking a brass bearing all night long! They got twenty-five miles up the road the next day and discovered the camera missing. it was a good camera and they never got it back. The next few days in Virginia they got stuck in mud and couldn't move for three days. They camped in an abandoned country store until it stopped raining. A woman killed them three chickens and baked salt rising bread which they loved. Then they wraped ropes around the hubs of the car and pulled the car ahead by wrapping the ropes around trees and pulling the car. Every few miles there were toll gates. Virginia was awful. It took them two weeks to get through there.
On Market Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania a headlight went out and Harry had a hard time driving in the dark. As they were driving to the Morgan Farm in Oseola, Pennsylvania their last inner tube blew. They packed the tire with hay and wrapped a rope around it then stopped to fix it in Oseola. It was very cold and they had to patch the tire so they set a can of cement in the cylinder to warm it. They forgot about it and the can of cement fell off and caught fire under the floor board. Harry's father said "My God she's gone boys" but Harry remembered the can of cememnt and knew it was that that was burning so he said "By God she's not!".
Throughout the trip the chain kept falling off. Finally in Albany, New York it broke. They hada to buy a new Baldwin chain tao fit the car.
They finally made it to Ledyard, Cayuga County, New York State and bought a farm on Goose Lane. Charles, Harry's father, didn't make a good farmer. He thought all you had to do was throw in the seeds and take it easy until they came up. He hunted rabbits all day. This didn't work out to well and he had to do a lot of hard work from 1912 until 1929. He did a lot of work as a carpenter.
Harry worked for Ray Tuttle for twenty-two years in the plumbing trade. In 1943 Harry bought the Ledyard store and worked there for four years when he sold it in 1947. He and Pearl lived in the house next to the store.
Harry played the guitar and sang and knew a lot of folk songs from the mountains of North Carolina. One facvorite song was the railroad song where he could name each railroad in the US and what other railroads they hooked into. He also took part in minstrel shows.
They moved to Poplar Ridge where they lived until their deaths. Harry was a prolific writer in his later years writing under the pen name Bluebell for the Southern Cayuga tribune. He also became an avid fisherman, and worked at the town dump. In addition to this he kept a really nice garden and cheicken flock.
At his funeral, the minister told everyone Harry was a scamp.
Much of this information comes from the Poplar Ridge paper dated May 25, 1972.
