Biography

Flag of Lancashire (adopted 2008)
Isabella (Whiteside) Miller was born in the Hamlet of Howick Cross, Lancashire, England.

Isabella was born on the 3 November 1805 in the Hamlet of Howick Cross, Parish of Penwortham, and baptized on the 29 December 1805 at the Parish Church of St. Mary, Church Avenue, in the Town of Penwortham, on the south bank of the River Ribble facing the Town of Preston, in the Borough of South Ribble, Lancashire, England[1][2]. She was the daughter of Henry (Whiteside) and Isabel (Maiden Name not recorded), who possibly married around 1800 at the Parish Church of St. Mary, in the Town of Penwortham, Parish of Penwortham, in Lancashire, England. Henry and Isabel had at least the following children:--

  1. James Whiteside, Ca. February 1802 at Howick Cross; bap. 21 February 1802 at St. Mary's, Penwortham, Lancashire[3][4];
  2. Isabel "Isabella" (Whiteside) Clayton Miller (1805-1869);
  3. Christopher Whiteside, born 9 September 1807 at Howick Cross; bap. 18 October 1807 at St. Mary's, Penwortham, Lancashire[5][6];
  4. Mary (Whiteside), born 14 April 1809 at Howick Cross; bap. 18 June 1809 at St. Mary's, Penwortham, Lancashire[7][8].

Isabella married Weaver, Henry Clayton, on the 29 October 1825 at the Parochial Chapel of St. Leonard's, Church Brow, in the Village of Walton-Le-Dale, on the south bank of the River Ribble, Parish of Walton-Le-Dale, opposite the Town of Preston, adjacent to Bamber Bridge, in the borough of South Ribble, in Lancashire, England. Both were single at the time and lived in the Village. After the posting of Banns, they were married by the Curate, Samuel (Radcliffe) in front of witnesses, George (Ward) and James (Tomlinson)[9]. Henry and Isabella had the following children:--

  1. Mary (Clayton) Billington (1826-1887);
  2. John Clayton, born Ca. September 1828; bap. 12 October 1828 at St. John the Evangelist, Preston, Lancashire[10]; and
  3. Elizabeth "Betty" (Clayton), born Ca. July 1831; bap. 31 July 1831 at St. John the Evangelist, Preston, Lancashire[11].

However, when Henry passed away in 1831, Isabella married her second husband, Cotton Weaver, Thomas Miller. There is a Marriage Record for a Thomas (Miller) and "Elizabeth" (Clayton) that took place on the 13 October 1833 at the Parish Church of St. Mary, in the Town of Penwortham, Lancashire. The couple were both from the Parish of Penwortham and were married by Banns "with consent of Parties". Minister, Robert Atherton (Barnstone) married the couple in front of witnesses Thomas (Todd) and William (Ingham)[12]. This is possibly Isabella's and Thomas' marriage record but why would Isabella transcribe her name as "Elizabeth"? They went on to have the following children:--

  1. Anne (Miller) Salisbury or Victory, born Ca. March 1834; bap. 30 March 1834 at St. Mary, Penwortham, Lancashire[13]; and
  2. Margery (Miller) Kendall, born Ca. July 1836; bap. 24 July 1836 at St. Mary, Penwortham, Lancashire[14].
  3. Mary Ann (Miller) Hood, born Ca. 1837 in Penwortham, Lancashire;
  4. Susanna (Miller) Gardner, born between April and June 1839 in Penwortham; bap. 28 July 1839 at St. Mary, Penwortham, Lancashire[15][16];
  5. Isabella (Miller) Blackledge, born between January and March 1842; bap. 29 May 1842 at St. Mary, Pentwortham, Lancashire[17]; and
  6. Thomas (Miller), born between April and June 1847 at Pentwortham, Lancashire[18].

In 1841, Isabella (35) and Thomas (40) lived with children Anne (7), Margery (5) and Susanna (Miller) (2), along with her children Cotton Weaver, Mary (15), John (14) and Betty "Caton" (aka Clayton) (10). The family reside at Penwortham Lane, in the Town of Penwortham, Lancashire, England[19]. Thomas passed away in 1843 and in 1847, Isabella gave birth to a son, out of wedlock:--

  1. Thomas (Miller), born between April and June 1847 at Pentwortham, Lancashire[20].

In 1851, Isabella (44), now a widow, worked as a Power Loom Weaver, living with children, Labourer, John (Clayton) (21); Power Loom Weaver, Anne (Miller) (17); Mary Ann (Miller) 14), Isabella (Miller) (8) and Thomas (Miller) (3). Their home was located at 3 St. Mary's Street, in the Town of Preston, Lancashire, England[21].

In 1861, Isabella, now (55), lived with children Cotton Weavers, Margery (24), Susanna (21), Isabella (18) and Thomas (13) (Miller) at 22 Smith Street, in the Town of Preston, Lancashire, England[22]. However, Isabella passed away, at around the age of 65, on the 30 October 1869 at Ribbleton Lane, in the Town of Preston, Lancashire, England[23]. Her burial took place on the 2 November 1869 at Preston Cemetery, New Hall Lane, Ribbleton, in the Town of Preston, Lancashire, England[24]. The inscription on the Headstone reads as follows:--In Affectionate Remembrance Of ISABELLA MILLER, Who Died Octr. 30th 1869, Aged 65 Years.
