Joel was the son of Jonathan Whitney III and Esther Parkhurst. He was a Revolutionary War veteran.[1] Joel was an early settler of Seneca, Ontario, New York. [2] He married Sibyl Whitmore. Their children were:

Clarissa Whitney Belding Leeson 1800 –
Sibyl Whitney 1801–1820

They lived in Seneca, Ontario, New York. [3] Joel died in 1826 and is buried in Crittenden Cemetery, Geneva, Ontario County, New York. [4] His Will was in Probate in 1826. [5]
