The son of Austin Whittlesey and Elizabeth (Carr) Whittlesey, John was born in Union Springs in 1862.[citation needed] His father was a plow modeler and inventer.[1][2][3] In 1900, John lived in New York City, boarding with Charles Henry Stow and Emma R. (Manning) Stow and working as a machinery salesman. He married the daughter of Charles and Emma Snow, Ariadne orinne Stow) Whittlesey, marrying in New York City on June 2, 1900.[4] They had one son together.
In 1910, residing in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, John worked as the manager of a boiler company.[5] By 1920, they lived in in Cleveland, Ohio, where John worked selling the boilers, working on his own account as the president of the company and a construction engineer.[6]
John Whittlesey passed away in Cleveland, Ohio at the age of 67[7][8] and is buried at Knollwood Cemetery in Mayfield Heights, Ohio.[9]
