Richard Wilbraham was born on 13 August 1525 in Woodhey, Faddiley, Cheshire, England, a son of Ralph Wilbraham (-1552) and Lady Elizabeth Sandford. (FindaGrave.com Index and Ormerod say he was of Nantwich, not Woodhey)
Richard married Elizabeth (Maisterson) Wilbraham (1532-1590), daughter of Thomas Maisterton 20 October 1550 in Nantwich, Cheshire.
They had four sons:
Richard subsequently remarried Margaret Elcock (abt.1538-) on 7 August 1591.
Richard purchased part of Bechton Manor, Cheshire from Sir Hugh Beeston on 4 May 1609. Richard Wilbraham also bought the paramount rights over the whole of Betchton, from George Cotton, of Combermere on 20 March 1610, there followed a long and tedious lawsuit over rents this was not successfully settled until 1655, by his grandson. [1] Townsend House in Nantwich was built by Richard Wilbraham. Richard began the Wilbraham Diary, which subsequent generations of the family would continue for 400 years. He recorded, often poignantly, births, marriages and deaths in the family and also significant events in Nantwich – a flood in 1574, the Great Fire in 1583, a famine in 1585 and a great plague in 1604. His eldest son died in London in 1601 and Thomas Wilbraham, his grandson, became his heir. [2]
His family pedigree is published in Ormerod's History of the County Palatine and City of Chester and confirms his wife and children. [3]
Richard died on 2 February 1612 in Nantwich, Cheshire, England aged 88 years and was buried in St Mary's Church. [4]
