Joseph was born in 1755, the son of Stephen and Mary (Pierson) Wilcox, in Killingworth, Connecticut.
When the Revolutionary War broke out Joseph became an officer in the Continental Army where he served honorably. In his memoirs, Alexander Hamilton stated, "Joseph is esteemed, a brave and active officer." When the war ended, Joseph made his way back home where he married Phebe Morgan, the daughter of Theophilus and Phebe (Merrill) Morgan, in Killingworth, Connecticut.
Phebe and Joseph would have the following children:
Rebecca Wilcox (1786– )
Susanna Wilcox (1788– )
Joseph Morgan Wilcox (1790–1814)
Henry Pierson Wilcox (1792–1870)
Joseph would eventually become a General in the Connecticut Militia. He and Phebe's son, Joseph Morgan Wilcox, attended the United States Military Academy and graduated first in his class. As a First Lieutenant he fought in the War of 1812 down in Alabama against the Creek Indians who had sided with the British. Young Joseph was killed in battle in 1814.
Joseph would pass away in 1817 at 62 years of age while making his home in Cayuga County, New York. No burial record has been found.
