Biography
He is the son of Elisha Wilkes and Elizabeth Moseley Wilkes.
The children I have found from this marriage are:
Simeon P. Wilkes, April 22, 1849 - June 27, 1903 Married Sarah Hulda McClendon on March 14, 1878. Info shows burial at Mt. Zion, but not listed in cemetery on Findagrave.
Mary Ann Wilkes 1851-1937. Married William Harrison McClendon on December 4, 1868
Charity Wilkes December 20, 1852 - August 1939. Married Charlton B. Smith
David J."Braum" Wilkes 1854 - 1928 Married Allie Coursey
All research that I have seen says that he was given the nickname of "Pappy" due to the many children he fathered.
Research also shows he is the father of 3 daughters by Rachel Branch Henry, (Charity's older sister), Nancy, Annie Eliza and Charity.
John's older brother, David, married Oud's older sister Martha "Pattie" Branch.
John is my 3G grandfather as well as 4G uncle to me. Rachel & John's daughter Nancy is my 2G grandmother.
This has been a very hard family to sort out! He and the Branch sisters were second cousins. He had 2 daughter's with the name Charity by two sisters. Which makes his two Charity daughters half-sisters and 1st cousins! And 3rd cousins?
He must have been one heck'uva man!
