Elizabeth was born in 1870 in Friskney, Lincolnshire.[1] She was the daughter of James Wilkinson and Lydia Phillips; her birth was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1870 in the Spilsby district of Lincolnshire.[2]
Her mother died soon after her birth and in the 1871 census Elizabeth (then age 1) was in Friskney, Lincolnshire and was looked after by her aunt, Sophia Wilkinson.[1]

Elizabeth married George Pickering, a surveyor and the son of William Pickering a fisherman, on 3 June 1895 in Friskney, Lincolnshire.[3]
The couple lived in Friskney and their son Stanley Pickering was born in 1896.[4][5]
Elizabeth and Stanley (a 16 year old farm hand) lived for a while in Margate, Kent before they left England and arrived in Boston, Massachusetts on the ship Cymric on 14 June 1912 having departed from Liverpool. Their destination was Modale, Iowa.[6]
