Biography

Charles Fitch Williams was born on 10 Apr 1855^[1] in Ohio, presumably in Cleveland where his parents lived in 1860. However, some sources report that he was born in Illinois. He was the son of Grant Fitch Williams (1829-1870) and Laura Cooke (1830-1904).

1860 US Census:^[2] He was listed as 4yo and born in OH. He was living in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co, OH with his father Grant (30; NY), mother Laura (30; OH), and maternal step-grandmother Rebecca H Fitch (69; England).

Charles' father Grant passed away in Kent, Portage Co, OH in Jan 1870 when Charles was 14yo.

1870 US Census:^[3] Charles was listed as 14yo and born in Illinois (rather than Ohio). He was living in Franklin Twp, Portage Co, OH with his widowed mother Laura (38; OH), his younger sister Laura (9; OH), and his younger brother Grant (2; OH).

Charles married Caroline Roselle "Carrie" Greene on 8 Oct 1879 in Cuyahoga Co, OH. They would have at least five children, all born in the same house on Seeley Ave in Cleveland OH^[4]:

• Gilbert Cooke Williams (1881-1894) - teen death during mastoid (ear) surgery
• Ada Marie (Williams) Williams (1882-1949) - married her cousin Percy Williams
• Alice Louise (Williams) Davis (1882-1933)
• Donna Caroline (Williams Priday Davis (1884-1964)
• Carl Stuart Williams (1886-1978)

The family moved from Cleveland to Willoughby, OH in 1886 for a few years. At some point around 1890, Charles abandoned his family and moved to Chicago, IL. His wife and children returned to Cleveland.

Charles does not appear on the 1900 Census record^[5] with Caroline and his children. No 1900 or 1910 Census record has been found for Charles. There is a possible 1920 Census record for him in Chicago.

Charles may have remarried in Illinois and may have had another child by a second wife.

He passed away at age 65 on 10 Aug 1920 in Chicago, IL. He is buried in Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland, OH. ^[1]
