Biography

Maria was born January 20, 1871 in Kentucky. She was the oldest of at least five children (maybe seven^[1]) born to Matthew Roger and Lucy Frances "Fannie" French Williams.

Maria married George Thomas "Tom" Sidney Bandy, 5 Sep 1888. Her mother Fannie died a year later in 1889.

Her younger sister Nancy, married her husband Tom's nephew, William Andrew Bandy (son of John Richard "Dickey" Bandy),^[2] in 1891.

Maria and Nannie's father Matt did not die until 1914, but the younger Williams siblings, Leona (or Lee Ona) "Lonny", Harry Earnest, Wilce "Bud" Armstong are listed together in the 1900 US Census with Nancy and William.^[3]

Maria and Tom Bandy had nine children, but three died young. Hattie Toy, Hershel Otis, Grace Kate, Earnest McKinley, Lena Maud (or Maude), Bertha May, Dovie Lois, Era Gladys, and an unnamed infant.

The family lived in Scottsville, Allen county, Kentucky. Her daughter Lena was born in nearby Sumner county, Tennessee just across the state line. Her mother Fannie died in Macon county, Tennessee, also next to both Sumner and Allen counties.

Maria died in Scottsville, Kentucky, June 20, 1949 at age 78.

Research Notes

1880: Living with parents, sister and three brothers. Indexed as Maria F, though the cursive can easily be mistaken for an 'F', it looks closer to a 'T'. Census takers also list children in order of age, and she is listed first among her siblings, although her age looks to be written as '2', but should probably be read as a '7'. Lonny is listed as a son in the family, and no other daughter for that age is listed, but I have a photo of "Aunt Lee Williams (mama's sister)," in Lena's handwriting.

Maybe there are too many errors on the 1880 census for this to be the same family. But otherwise, there are too many similarities for it not to be the same family.

1900: living with George and their 5 children in Scottsville, Allen Co. Age 29. Mother of 6, 5 living. Listed as Herissie (a misunderstanding of Theresa?)^[4]

1910: living with George and their 6 children in Scottsville. Age 38. Mother of 8, 6 living. listed as Mariah.^[5]

1920: living in Scottsville with George & children. Age 49.^[6]

1930: living in Scottsville with George. Age 59.^[7]

1940: living in Scottsville with George. Age 69.^[8]

1949: died June 20. Buried in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Scottsville. ^[9][10]
