Interesting reading regarding the voyage to Australia on the Otago:

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/3431290?searchTerm=1884%20otago "The Otago Inquiry", The Brisbane Courier Sat 21 Jun 1884.

With this in mind, it would be interesting reading to get a hold of a copy of "Diary of journey from Glasgow to Brisbane on the emigrant ship Otago 1884 (HR/4/1/1/2)" https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/accessions/2013/13returns/13ac599.htm

Do you know if Thomas was a tailor there are several entries in the Queensland electoral rolls for Thomas(tailor) & Mary Ann residing in Morton street who I think is this Thomas. I can add them to his profile if it is the correct one.

Hmmm, I'll take a look at the records for the Otago, I believe he may've been but I'll confirm.

That would be great as the only passenger lists I can find on Ancestry do not list his occupation. His death or marriage certificates might also show if he was a tailor by trade.

Yeah, there are usually two or three sets, embarkation records, ship records and destination port records. I find usually only one of these has the occupation recorded. This one might be too old and not have the same documentation but I vaguely remember seeing something. Haven't found it again yet, still looking. 🙂

The other thing that is useful when looking at electoral rolls is to follow them through from year to year until you see some of the children names appear at the same address to verify.

It appears that yes, Thomas was in fact a Tailor by trade so likely the one you see recorded in the electoral rolls. Also in my research I came across a compilation of a satirical newspaper that was published aboard the Otago during the voyage (compiled and printed following their arrival). NLA has a digital copy here:

https://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-52848757/view?partId=nla.obj-100892152

I'd encourage the reading of it as not only does it contain the satirical news articles it also includes depositions made following their arrival during the investigation conducted by the QLD government into the conditions aboard. Of special interest is an excerpt of Thomas' diary he kept aboard the ship in the latter half of the book.
