He married Elizabeth 'Eliza' Madison on May 21, 1819 in Madison, Virginia. He died in 1830 in Culpeper, Virginia, at the age of 29.

John Lewis married Elizabeth "Eliza" Madison, who is noted as the niece of President James Madison. The couple died early in life leaving one daughter, Frances.[1]
