Note H00157Thomas Wilson Admitted-25 August 1843, District-Armagh. August 9 1847 Embarked at Tilbury on the Sir George Seymour, Manifest No-52, August 12 1847 Sir George Seymour departs Gravesend. November 27 1847 Sir George Seymour arrives in Auckland and pensioners stay on board from their to Howick beach by Goverment brig, staying in make up sheds and tents until their own temporary sod houses were built. Thomas sod cottage was built at Mellon Bay,
Pension-Chelsea Hospital Pension 1/6 1/2d per day commenced 1 July 1847, Rank-Sergeant, Unit-41st Regiment of Foot, Born-Armagh Circa 1802, Status-Married, 1 child under 10 on manifest.
Thomas served 8 years with the 89th Foot regiment.
1849 census with Major Grays Company. Thomas Wilson, Sergeant, Pension 1/6 1/2d, aged 46yrs, Church of England, Elizabeth aged 37 yrs, Elizabeth aged 5 yrs, Thomas John aged 2 yrs, all Roman Catholic.

Thomas was a Fencible from Howick area. He , Lizzie and Elizabeth came to New Zealand on Free Passage on the "Sir George Seymour"
Biography of Thomas WILSON. (As taken from "The Royal New Zealand Fencibles
1847-1852")
Thomas b. 1802 at Armagh, Ireland, the son of John and Mary (nee BROWN). He enlisted in the 41st Regiment and served 13yrs 3mths, and 8yrs with the 89th Regiment. Height 5' 9", grey hair and blue eyes with a fresh complexion, very good character, occupation storekeeper. He was a Deargent when
discharged unfit for further service. Married to Elizabeth MURPHY on 22 January 1844 in the Church of England at Armagh, Ireland. She was the daughter of James and Sarah BROWNE of Lincolnshire and born 1812. He left from Armagh, Ireland with wife and 1 child Elizabeth b. 1844. On arrival in Howick they were remarried at Howick Catholic Chapel and had another 4 children. They had land in Howick Village and a small farm. In 1849-51 he held a Depasturing Licence at Howick for 6-9 cattle, he was also a storekeeper. Thomas died in 1877 and his widow Elizabeth lived until 1890 and died in Howick.

Thomas' land was on what is now the corner of Waterloo Road and Wellington
Street, Howick. Most Howick Fencibles took up the Govts option of aquiring an extra 5 acres
at 2 gunies an acre, many built sod cottages on these allotments. Those who's sod cottages still existed until the 20 century included Thomas WILSON (Sir George Seymore) at Mellons Bay. In 1849 Thomas took the advantage of the Govt's use of wasteland around Howick and paid his dues of 10/6d per
annum for a Depasturizing Licence on 5th Feb 1849 and the right to own his own livestock,
Thomas was granted 9 cattle in April 1849. He was a Warden of the Hundred of Howick and also allocated a slaughterhouse Licence in 1858, Wellington Street, Howick.

Daniel Pollen Commissioner of Crown Lands, Wardens' office, Howick Hundred April 23 1861. The Wardens of the Hundred have made the following apportionment of Cattle for the present year. Two head of small Cattle allowed in lieu of one head of great Cattle - Thomas Wilson 11.

Thomas Wilson, Male, of Pneumonia, aged 75 yrs, last seen alive by Dr Fizgerald 8 July 1877, died Howick 9th July 1877. Born Armagh, son of John Wilson, weaver of fancy works and Mary Brown. In New Zealand 29 years. Married Armagh at age 44 to Elizabeth Murphy. 2 male Issue living - 3 Female issued living. Informant-Richard W Wilson, son , Howick.
Headstone Reads: In Loving Memory of Thomas Wilson who departed this life on July 9th 1877 aged 75 years, Also Elizabeth the beloved wife of the above who died on April 19th 1890 aged 76 years, Also their son Thomas John who died on November 26 th 1964 aged 6 years Reqiesgat in Pace.
