James was born 8 July 1817 [1]in Abbeville District, South Carolina, the son of James Wilson and Sarah Richey. He moved with his parents to Anderson District about 1835.[2][3] On 22 December 1836 he married Mary "Polly" Martin.[4] James became a Baptist preacher, serving as pastor of Six and Twenty Baptist Church from 1843 to 1864. In 1860 he purchased land in Banks County, Georgia, where he moved sometime before 1870. [5][6] He became the first pastor of Webbs Creek Baptist Church in 1881. James died on 15 December 1882 and is buried at Webbs Creek Baptist Church cemetery.[1]
