Joseph Wilson served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: 10 Sep 1862 Mustered out: 17 Jul 1863 Side: USA Regiment(s): 27th Maine Infantry
Birth: Joseph D. Wilson was most likely born 31 Jan 1825 in Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was the son of Thomas and Esther Wilson who were born in Nova Scotia as well.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
Likely Sibling: William Wilson born 17 Mar 1828.[1]
Immigration and Naturalization: Joseph D. Wilson became a naturalized citizen of the United States on 9 September 1864 in Portland, Maine at the age of about 39. He arrived in Boston, Massachusetts on or about 15 Apr 1847.[4][7]
-and more especially under the provinces of the Act of Congress July 17, 1862, entitled and as to define the [pay?] and enrollments of certain officers after assessing and for other purposes.
Marriage: Joseph D. Wilson marries Mary Ann Perkins 21 Sep 1851 in Lynn, Massachusetts where Joseph has been living. Mary has been living in Wells, Maine. This the first marriage for both of them.[8]
1860 Census, Berwick, Maine:[11] Joseph age 35; Mary age 25; and Thacher, age 7 are enumerated. Joseph is listed as a carpenter. They own no real estate.
Military Service: Enlisted 10 Sep 1862 at age 37. Mustered in on 30 Sep 1863 in Portland, Maine as a private with 27th Maine Infantry. Mustered out 17 Jul 1863 in Portland, Maine.[12][6]
-Physical Description: Dark Complexion, Blue Eyes, 6 foot and 1 inches tall
-One record has his middle initial as B, but other records acknowledge the error and correct his middle initial to D.[13]
1862 - 1863 Residence: South Berwick and or North Berwick, Maine.[12][6]
1870 Census, Lynn, Massachusetts:[2] Joseph age 46 and his wife, Mary age 36, are living with their children. Joseph owns real estate. Joseph and their son "Thacher", age 16, are working as housing carpenters. Thacher has not attended school in the last year. It appears the census taker originally indicated that Joseph was not able to vote, but then crossed off the mark.
1880 Census, Lynn, Massachusetts:[14] The family is living at 55 Timson Street. All the children are still living in the home. Joseph is continues to work as a carpenter, but has been unemployed for 6 months during the census year. Son Thatcher is working as a machinist. Their daughters are attending school.
-Directly below Joseph's family is the family of a carpenter Charles Wilson, age 62, and family. Charles Wilson was born in Massachusetts, but his parents were born in Nova Scotia. Is Charles in anyway related to Joseph?
-The cemetery records specify that neither Joseph Wilson nor his son Thatcher are interred there.
Second Wife, marriage to his widowed sister-in-law: Joseph D. Wilson marries Melinda (Perkins) Allen) on 25 Jan 1885 in North Berwick, Maine. The marriage is recorded in Lynn, Massachusetts where Joseph has been residing. This record confirms this is the second marriage for both of them. Melinda is Joseph's first wife's sister.[3]
1900 Census, Wells, Maine:[5] Joseph age 75 and Melinda and a 12 year old child appear to be living in the same home in which Melinda has been living since at least 1870. See Joseph's wives' sister Abigail (Perkins) Allen and her son Freeman S Allen (transcribed as Francis) continue to live adjcent to Melinda. Joseph is a farmer. They own their home which is listed as a farm with no debt; there is a farm schedule.
-Child (or grandchild?) of Melinda and Joseph Wilson: Walter W. Wilson, born about Sep 1887 is enumerated within this household. See Research Notes below.
Death and burial of second wife: Melinda Wilson passed away on 23 Apr 1901 in Wells, Maine from asthma. She was aged 62 years, 7 months and 16 days.[20] She is buried in the Wilson Plot on Quarry Road in Wells. See notes above under the death of Joseph's first wife who was Melinda's sister.[19]

Death: Joseph passed away between 15 Mar 1908 and 14 Nov 1908. His last residence was 123 East 2nd Street, Long Beach California.[22][24]
Research Notes
Further confirmation of birth including Canadian Census and details of arrival in Boston, Massachusetts required to confirm currently sourced birth record and sibling(s).
1850 US Census Record is required.
Joseph's record from his first marriage and 1860 Census indicates he was born in Lynn, Massachusetts. All other records indicate Nova Scotia, Canada.
The 1900 Census has no citizenship information other than he was born in Nova Scotia.[5]
Death Record is required.
It's possible that Walter W. Wilson listed on the 1900 Census is not Joseph and and Melinda (Perkins) (Allen) Wilson's son, but their grandson. This same census indicates wife Melinda has had 4 children and only two are living. Those numbers would be correct if she bore children with her first husband Clarkson M Allen only; and Walter Wilson is not counted. Also, Melinda would have been about 49 when Walter was born. This is not unheard of, but unusual.[5] The support that Walter might be their grandson is as follows:
-On 28 Feb 1900 Thatcher remarried to Stella Poronto in New Haven, Connecticut.[26]
-On the 1900 Census Thatcher and Stella are living in the home of her grandfather in New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut. There is no child name Walter, Warren or with the last name of Wilson living in the home.[27]
-Son Thatcher Perkins Wilson passes away on 13 Sep 1929 in Los Angles, California. He is buried in Inglwood, Los Angles County California along with his son Walter Warren Wilson whose birth date is recorded as 10 Sep 1887; and death date is 20 Oct 1950.[28][29][30]
-No other near matches for Thatcher Wilson or Walter Wilson have been found on a 1900 Census.
-"Jacob Perkins of Wells, Maine and his descendants, 1583-1936," lists wives Mary A Perkins and Melinda (Perkins) (Allen) Wilson. It includes Joseph; but does not list any children for the Melinda and Joseph where it does includes the women's other children.[9]
