Disputed Marriage

The marriage register at St. Saviour, Southwark (now Southwark Cathedral), London, records the marriage by license on 16 November 1611/2 of Richard Denton to Helen Windebanke. [1]

Based on this record, Helen Windebanke has been identified as the wife of Richard Denton, who emigrated to New England and settled at Hempstead, Long Island, in New Netherland. This is an error. This is too early for that Richard Denton to have married. The Helen Windebanke who married in 1611 must have married some other Richard Denton.[2]

Biography

Ellyn, daughter of Thomas Windebanke (Wyndebanke), esquire, was christened in Hurst, Berkshire, on 1 February 1594.[3] Helen Windebank is the daughter of Thomas Windebank and Frances Dymoke. [4]

Helen (Ellyn) Windebanke married Rev. Richard Denton on Nov. 16, 1612. She would have been 18 years old. She certainly was the right age to marry Richard Denton. This marriage record is from FindMyPast.com (Southwark St. Savior, Surrey, England. Rev. Richard Denton was born on June 29, 1595, at St. John the Baptist, Warley, Halifax, West Riding, Yorkshire. Windlblank-1 and Windebank-17 appear to represent the same person because: Birth & Death records match, same Husband.
