Biography

Flag of Yorkshire (adopted 2008)
Joseph Winn was born in Yorkshire, England.
Joseph was born in 1859[1] in Stanningley, Yorkshire, England, and was baptised in 1867.[2] In 1861 he lived with his parents, John Carrack Winn and Sarah Ann Isles, in Calverley, Yorkshire.[3] By 1871 they had moved to Pudsey, Yorkshire, and Joseph was an iron worker.[4]

At the time of the 1881 census Joseph and his brother Thomas lodged with the Leggott family on Taylor's Yard in Branston, Lincolnshire. Joseph worked as a boiler-maker.[5]

On Christmas Day 1883 Joseph married Sarah Ann Metcalf in Calverley, Yorkshire.[6][7] In 1891 the family lived in Pudsey.[8]

By 1901 the family had moved to Thornaby, Yorkshire, where Joseph worked as a "bridge yard helper."[9] He had become a tallow refiner by 1911.[10] In 1921 the Winns lived on Stainton Street, Thornaby, and Joseph was a "manufacturer of express firelighters."[11]

In 1934 he was found guilty of permitting a horse to be worked in an unfit state. He was a firewood merchant. "It was alleged that the horse fell down in Frances-street, Thornaby, and that it was so weak and in such a poor condition that it was unable to regain its feet." [12]

Sarah died in 1936 at the age of 76.[13] Joseph died in 1939 at the age of 79[14] and was buried in Thornaby Cemetery.[15]

Joseph Winn (62), married, Manufacturer Of Express Firelighter, head of household at 2 Stninton Street, Thornaby On Tees, Thornaby, Yorkshire (North Riding) in Middlesbrough registration district in England. Born in Yorkshire, England. Employed by Employer.
  12. HORSE FALLS DOWN. A 76-year-old Thornaby firewood merchant, Joseph Winn, of 2, Stainton-street, was fined £5 and costs for permitting a horse to be worked in an unfit state, and William Teasdale (25), of 7, Erimus-terrace, was fined 20s for working the horse in an unfit state.
It was alleged that the horse fell down in Frances-street, Thornaby, and that it was so weak and in such a poor condition that it was unable to regain its feet.
Evidence regarding the animal’s poor condition was given by Inspector Kendra and Sergeant Hezeltine. Defendants, who were represented by Mr. R. Nixon, denied the charges, and said that when the horse was taken out that morning it was quite fit. The suggestion was advanced by the defence that in falling the horse had injured itself. Mr. T. Jackson, of Stockton, prosecuted on behalf of the Society.
