Biography

Joseph Winslow was born on 21 Nov 1788 in East Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut, United States.[1] He was the son of Capt. Job Winslow, a shipwright, and his 2nd wife, Mary Rogers.[2] He was named as a beneficiary in the 1804 will of his father, Job Winslow, which was proven in 1810.[3]

Joseph had seven siblings, as well as seven half-siblings from his father's 1st marriage to Temperance Hayden.[3] There are burial records of his stepmother, who died in 1877, and his four half-siblings who died young at East Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut.[4]

By 1790, the family had moved 11 miles down the Connecticut River from East Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut to Lyme, New London County, Connecticut, per the 1790 federal census.[5] The location, on the mouth of the Connecticut River as it joins the Atlantic, may have been more convenient for his father's shipbuilding trade. Some accounts record that the family of Joseph's stepmother had ties to Saybrook, Middlesex County, Connecticut, which was just across the Connecticut River from Lyme.[1]

By 1800, the family had moved yet again, 130 miles northwest, inland from Lyme, Connecticut to Canaan, Columbia County, New York, per the 1800 federal census.[6] Some trees record that Joseph's parents lived in New Lebanon, but the town of New Lebanon was not formed from Canaan until 1818.[7]

1st Wife

Joseph married his first wife, Eunice, before 1810, as he, his wife and their first two children were recorded on the 1810 census in Canaan, Columbia County, New York, next door to his brother David.[8]

The name of Eunice as Joseph's 1st wife was identified in the 1891 death record of their son, William, born 1821, which named his parents as Eunice Winslow, born in New York, and Joseph Winslow, born (incorrectly) in Michigan.[9]

Some trees record that Joseph, son of Job Winslow and Mary Rogers, was the Joseph Winslow of Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts who married Eunice Fulton on 29 Jan 1809 in Pittsfield.[10] Eunice Fulton was born 24 Apr 1785, the daughter of John Fulton and his 2nd wife, the widow Anne (née Goodrich) Austin. [11]

(Not all researchers are confident this Joseph and Eunice, who lived in a different town, Pittsfield, are the same couple, due to conflicting 1810 census records, See Research Notes below. )

Eunice died before 1830, probably in Galen, Wayne County, New York, where they lived at the time. The age of a younger wife was recorded in the Joseph Winslow household on the 1830 census in Galen.[12] Unsourced family trees record she died on the 8th of April in either 1824 or 1826.

2nd Wife

Joseph married his 2nd wife, Polly "Hate" (probably Haight) before 1830, based on the younger age of his wife on the 1830 census.[12] Family trees without sources give their marriage date as 8 Nov 1827. They were probably married in Galen, Wayne County, New York, where Joseph had been living with his 1st wife and family.

We know Joseph married twice because the age of Polly, who was born in 1798[13] in the state of New York,[14] was too young to be the wife recorded with him on the 1810 census in Canaan (New Lebanon), Columbia County, New York[8] and the 1820 census in Galen, Seneca (Wayne) County, New York.[15]

Polly's birth name is on the 1909 death record of their son Wesley J. Winslow, born 1833, which named his parents as Joseph Winslow and "Polly Hate."[16]

Trajectory

About 1811, Joseph, his 1st wife and oldest two children moved from Canaan, Columbia County, New York[8] to about 40 miles north across the state line, to Bennington, Bennington County, Vermont. His older half-brother Richard Winslow had co-founded an iron manufacturing business, Winslow, Lynch & Co., in Bennington. After the business folded in 1813,[24] both brothers and their families went back to New York state.

According to an obituary of Joseph's son, George M. Winslow[25] (who was born in Bennington in 1811), after the family returned to New York, they lived in three places: 1) Westford, Otsego County, New York (where Joseph's sister Lucinda (Winslow) Fellows lived); 2) Charlotte, probably referring to the neighborhood in Rochester, Monroe County, New York, rather than the Charlotte in Chautauqua County, New York; and then 3) Galen, Seneca (Wayne) County, New York

The Joseph Winslow household is found in Galen on the 1820[15] and 1830[12] federal census. Galen, formerly of Seneca County, became part of Wayne County in 1823.[26] Galen was about 220 miles northwest of Canaan, Columbia County, New York, where Joseph and his 1st wife first lived.

About 1834, Joseph, his 2nd wife Polly and children moved about 360 miles west from Galen, New York to Dryden, Lapeer County, Michigan, where we find him on the 1840,[27] 1850[14] and 1860[28] federal census. The 1850 census in Dryden recorded Joseph, 62, his wife Polly, 52, his son Wesley, aged 17 (1833), born in New York, and his daughter Sarah, aged 15 (1835), born in Michigan.[14] Joseph lived in Dryden for nearly 30 years until his death in 1863.

Three of Joseph's siblings, Betsey, David and Hopey and their families, also left New York and moved west. These three siblings had been living in what was then called Genesee County, New York (various towns split into different towns, part of newly created counties), 280 miles northwest from Canaan, Columbia County. Betsey and Hopey moved to LaGrange County, Indiana, while David moved to Oakland County, Michigan and then to Lapeer County, Michigan, where Joseph and his family moved.

Joseph Winslow, aged 74, died on 18 Nov 1863 in Dryden, Lapeer County, Michigan, and was buried in North Dryden Cemetery in Dryden, Lapeer County, Michigan.[29] At his side was buried his wife Polly, who died 24 years later on 30 Jul 1877.[13]

Research Notes

Joseph of Dryden, son of Job Winslow & Mary Rogers

Joseph Winslow, who died in Dryden, Lapeer County, Michigan was very likely the son of Capt. Job Winslow and his 2nd wife Mary Rogers of Canaan, Columbia County, New York.[1] Their son, David Griffen Winslow, lived[30] and died in Metamora, Lapeer County, MIchigan, which is 8 miles west of Dryden.[31] The brothers appear to have been close, having lived next door to each other in Canaan in 1810.[8]

Eunice Fulton as wife – or not

Some researchers believe the jury is still out that Joseph Winslow (son of Capt. Job Winslow and Mary Rogers) and his 1st wife Eunice were the same couple named Joseph Winslow and Eunice Fulton, who married on 29 Jan 1809 in Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, about 10 miles east of Canaan (New Lebanon), Columbia County, New York.[10]

The 1810 census recorded a young Joseph Winslow household with wife and children in Pittsfield,[32] conflicting with the 1810 census record of a different young Joseph Winslow household with wife and children in Canaan.[8] We know the Joseph in Canaan was the son of Capt. Job Winslow and Mary Rogers, as he was living where his family lived and next door to his brother David, who also later lived in Lapeer County, Michigan. 1810 was the same year that the 1804 will of their father, Job Winslow of Canaan, was proven, naming Joseph, David and other living siblings, as beneficiaries.

It's important to remember that many men had the name, Joseph Winslow, and many women had the name, Eunice. On the 1810 federal census alone, there were 19 Joseph Winslow households in the United States: including 4 in Massachusetts, 3 in Maine, 6 in New York, 3 in Vermont and 1 in North Carolina.

Also on the 1810 census, is yet another young Joseph Winslow household, with wife and one young child, in nearby Stephentown, Rennselaer County, New York, which is about 17 miles from Pittsfield, Massachusetts and 10 miles from Canaan, Columbia County, New York.[33] There is a newspaper record of a Joseph Winslow of Pittsfield, Massachusetts dying of scrofula at the Berkshire Medical Institution in Pittsfield in 1845.[34]

Lyme, Conn. town records – no Winslow births

Some family trees record that Joseph was born in Lyme, New London County, Connecticut, where his family had moved by 1790, per the 1790 census.[5] However, according to David P. Holton's book, Winslow Memorial. Family Records of the Winslows and Their Descendants in America, Vol. 2 (1877), "The town clerk of Lyme writes us: 'I have carefully examined from 1743-1844 the records of marriages, births and deaths, and do not find the name of Winslow recorded there.'"[1]

Joseph was not born in Dighton, Mass.

Some family trees incorrectly name Joseph's birth place and some of his children as Dighton, Bristol County, Massachusetts, the birth place of his father Job. Records support that Capt. Job moved to Connecticut, where he married twice, and then to New York. The 1850 census named Joseph's birth place as New York,[14] and the 1860 census named his birth place as Connecticut.[28] Although the 1850 census is incorrect (as his parents were still in Connecticut in 1788), per the 1790 census, neither of them say Massachusetts.
