James was christened 2 May 1813 in St. Mary's, Bentworth, Hampshire.
He first married Mary Ann Palmer, widow of Charles Page.
With his wife Mary and 5 boys and 2 girls they emigrated to New Zealand.
They arrived in Nelson on the Bolton from Gravesend in 1842, and later settled in Takaka in 1865.
He was an agricultural labourer and leased the Maitai Run (dairy farm).
One of Takaka's early settlers, James was twice married and died aged 75 years.
He second married Anne (Packard) Benham: On 5 April 1882 Mary Ann Benham and James Winter were married. [1]
Death: On 9 November 1888 James Winter passed away, aged 75. [2]
