Biography

Cleo McKinley Wismer was born in Jan 1901 in Gainesville, Cooke County, Texas, the son of Henry Wismer and Rena Norris. [1] According to his sister, Reona Wismer Duncan, Cleo had a twin brother named Clifford Eugene Wismer, who died at birth or in early childhood. [2]

After the divorce of his parents in 1912, very little is known of him. He evidently took the surname of his mother's second husband, and began calling himself Cleo Applegate. In a city directory for Fort Worth, Texas, he is listed as a mechanic under the Applegate name.[3] In Shreveport, Louisiana, he is listed in a city directory in 1923, again as a mechanic under the name of Cleo Applegate.[4]

After that record, he is difficult to track. It is not known if he ever married after that time, or if he ever went again by the Wismer name. Cleo was mentioned by his step-father in a handwritten letter in 1925 [5] after the death of Cleo's mother, Lydia. In the letter, it seems to indicate that Cleo was still alive.

He passed away after some time after Nov 1925.
