Biography

Polly Witt was likely born around 1780 in Amherst County, Virginia, based on her marriage date, need for parental permission, and known residency of her family. It's very likely her given name was Mary, and Polly was a nickname.

Relationship based on Nelson County, Virginia, chancery record for disposition of father's land in 1809 (see attached image). Also, confirmed by Polly & Charles' marriage record which lists Jinney Witt as Polly's "father". Because her father Littleberry was deceased at time of her marriage, it's actually mother of the bride.

On 6 September 1800, Polly married Charles Tooley, brother of John Tooley, in Amherst County, Virginia. By 1810, she and Charles were in Madison County, Kentucky, where Charles apparently died (c. 1817). In the 1820 Madison County census, Polly was living with 3 children and within two houses of William Barnett, her step-father and mother.

• 1810 Madison County, Kentucky. Appears correct based on ages: Male adult is 26-44 yo; female adult is 26-44 yo; 3 boys under 10 yo; 1 girl 10-15. On the same page is a George Tooley 26-44 yo. ^[1]
• 1820 Madison County, Kentucky, mis-indexed under the name Polley Taoby, but clearly reads Tooly(sic). Polly's husband died in 1817, so it's just her and the children. Males: 2 10-16 yo; Females: 1 16-26; 1 26-45. She is listed 2 houses below a William Barnett (likely her step-father and mother).^[2]
