Biography

Her birth place is based on where the family was living at the time of the 1860 census. However, her older brother Samuel's death certificate says he was born in Verona, Alabama. Verona is in Lee County which borders Pontotoc County. From Verona to the Pontotoc County line, it's less than 6 miles, and to the far side of Pontotoc, it's only 18.5 miles. ^[1]

Research Notes

Notes from researcher Thomas Bland:

I suspect that James is related to John H L. One of John’s brothers, Silas, is listed in county genealogical records. It lists his parents and siblings and tells that his father, James H moved the family to the county from Alabama in 1848. The time frame would be consistent with the earliest records of James being there as well. I think I should look for a marriage record in Alabama for the time before the move. There is supposed to be a Wood family history here in the Ancestry resources also.

That one record I saw said that James was killed by outlaws during the Civil War but I have seen no other mention of that. He does not appear in the county during the 1870 census and neither did Susan." ^[12]
