George was born in 1839, Ashton Green, Ringmer, Sussex, England (that home still stands today but has been added too). He immigrated to America in 1870 ( the 1920 U.S. Census indicates George Immigrated in 1877, typo ?) and was naturalized on 10/9/1880. His occupation was shown on a number of census records as coal miner. In the 1920 Federal Census he was living in Woodbridge Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan with his daughter Jane and her husband Daniel Kaufman.
The Census also indicates George could read and write.

Notes
The 1900 Federal Census indicates that George arrived in America in 1870 so I looked at the online Passenger Lists for New York City,1870 from the National Archives at FamilySearch; https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Free_Online_New_York_Passenger_Lists,_1820-1897
I found six George Wood(s) and only one was a close match: Film 334, page 93, #155 George Wood age 30 England. All is good to that point then we come to occupation. George was a "miner" but this George was listed as a "Mariner". Could George have said miner and the immigration employee heard mariner. Sure, its possible, but we will never know so I can't say with any certainty this is my Geroge.
The 1920 Federal Census shows that George immigrated in 1879 but I wrote this off as a typo since at that time a person had to be in-country 3 years before being Naturalized and George was Naturalized in 1880.
Lastly, I found a source that indicated George immigrated in 1874 so I looked at the entire passenger list for the port of New York in1874 and found a handful of George Wood's but none were a close match.
Thanks to Bob Wood for starting this profile.
