Biography

James Dickenson Word was born in 1797, the son of Thomas Word and Justianna Dickinson.

He married Amelia Hooper, and together they had 9 children before she passed away in fall 1850 en route home from a visit to family back in Georgia.

In the 1850 Federal Census, James, Amelia and most of their children were living in Eastport, Tishomingo, Mississippi. [1]

On November 22, 1854, James married a second cousin, Jane Byrd Word in Georgia. She helped him raise his younger children and he provided a home for her and some of her children. Their shared great grandfather was Charles Word Sr./Bartow County, Georgia, USA. [2]

In the US Federal Census for 1860, James and wife Jane are found in Barker’s District, Floyd, Georgia, along with his widowed daughter Amelia Foote and her daughter Clara. Amelia's son James Adonijah was born in September, but is not reflected in the enumeration of people living in the household as of June 1, 1860. [3]

Note: The 1860 slave schedule recorded 17 enslaved persons and 3 slave houses living on the Word plantation. [4]

By 1870 James has returned to Tishomingo County, Mississippi, but is living in Iuka, a town on the Memphis and Charleston rail line, just a few miles from the river trading village of Eastport. [5]

James appears in the 1880 census at Iuka, Tishomingo, Mississippi, at age 83, as a farmer and surveyor. He is listed as head of household, with widowed daughter "Ellen Nance" (child #3) and her children, as well as granddaughter Nellie G Word. [6]

Died 30 MAY 1890. Iuka, Tishomingo, Mississippi. His son Thomas died one day later in Texas.

Buried Oak Grove Cemetery, Iuka, Tishomingo, Mississippi, USA. [7]

Event: Codicil to Last Will and Testament. 13 MAR 1888. Tishomingo County, Mississippi, USA.

Will: 08 FEB 1886. Tishomingo County, Mississippi, USA.

Notes

James Word's wife Amelia died in October, 1850, before the enumeration date on November 20. However, she was included in that census enumeration since the census instructions above the third column mandated the inclusion of "The name of every Person whose usual place of abode on the first day of June, 1850, was in this family." How sad this must have been for James and the children!
Marriage info: James and his second wife Jane were second cousins. Their shared great grandfather was Charles Word Sr.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

Word-378 and Word-109 appear to represent the same person because: same birthday, parents, and wife. Proposing merge into lower-numbered/older profile, per WikiTree policy.
You may collaborate with male YDNA for the Word family via familytreedna.com. I am the admin for this project.

Mr. Ramage's unsourced information should be compared with is missing two daughters of marriage above (Emeline and Maria Justina). It also has incorrect birthdates for both Eliza Amelia and Sarah (including wrong birth order, Eliza is older). And the first and third wives of JDW are missing. Please merge with better sourced and mostly correct profile: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Word-378

Alana, please add me to this profile (Word-378) and to Word-109 as a profile manager. This James D. Word is my ggg-grandfather, and I've figured out the both basic B/M/D dates and locations for this particular Word-Hooper marriage and their children. I'd be happy to clean up and merge the two profiles currently existing for this direct ancestor and his wife Amelia Monroe Hooper (my GGG grandmother). I can add the pre-1826 marriages for each of them, and where they lived when, and more. I have all the "missing" information thanks to careful archiving done by one of my great aunts, the Bible of their daughter Amelia, AND last November's visit to Iuka and the Tishomingo County Archives. Thanks for your work since 2016, and I hope we can collaborate on next steps.
