Born in Bermuda Charles was a Merchant Seaman employed as a fireman and served throughout the First World War.
He remained in Liverpool after the war but was murdered by a mod during the Liverpool race riots.
He is the namesake of Charles Wootton College of Further Education in Liverpool. The college was named after Charles Wotten (sometimes spelled Wootton), a young Bermudian seafarer in his 20s who was murdered by an angry white mob during the race riots of 1919. The learning centre in his name was established in 1974 but closed in 1999. It has since been demolished and replaced by apartments called Parliament Square.[1]
In 2017, a plaque was placed near where he died[2]
He was buried in a paupers grave but in 2023, he is finally received a headstone.
