Bertha Wright was born in 1858[1], the daughter of Charles Wright and Ann Mauser of Beach Meadows[2][3][4]
On January 22, 1885, she married Wellington Giffin, the son of Robert Giffin and Lavinia Dunlop of Sable River, Nova Scotia[2], and their children included:
Gladys Victoria, born June 1887, who died in August 1887[5][6]
Miriam, born circa 1890, who died before the 1901 Census[7]
Charles Wellington, born 1891[8], who married Hester Gardner and died without having children
Robie Freeman, born 1894[1], a veteran of WWI, who married Florence Trefry and had a family
Thelma Marie, born 1899[1], who married Tom Harlow and had a family
Wellington was a sea captain when they were married. The 1891 Census[7] shows them in Louis Head, the fishing village where he was born. Before the 1901 Census[1], they moved inland to Sable River, to help Wellington's great-uncle run the Dunlop Inn. In addition to the stagecoach, which stopped at the Inn twice each day, once over lunch and the second time overnight, Bertha served as post-mistress and was active in the Baptist Church. Wellington worked as a carpenter to make ends meet. Eventually the Inn would pass on to their son Robie.[9]
Bertha "Sarah" Eliza (Wright) Giffin died March 26, 1928[3], and was buried in the Hillside Cemetery at Sable River, Nova Scotia. The gravestone reads: "Wellinton Jackson Giffin, born July 12, 1848, died November 26, 1926. His beloved wife, Bertha Eliza, born September 20, 1858, died March 26, 1928."
