Laura was the daughter of James and Agnes Mountney[1] She spent the first few years of her life on the family farm in Galway Township in Peterborough County, Ontario.[2]
Her father died when she was about seven years old[3]and sometime between the ages of 7 and 12, she was adopted by Ed and Jemima Pimmett Wright. When she was 13, she and her adoptive parents were living in Smith Township, Peterborough County. (Her family name is listed as Mountain on the 1911 Census). Her adoptive father and uncle were working as "lumbering guides."[4]
