Biography

Phila was the first child of Ambrose and his wife Elizabeth Patterson. Phila was born at Wrightstreet in the town of Durham, Greene County, NY.

Reportedly she was good looking, tall and "commanding", Though she was said to be the most efficient person in her locality she was full of joy, sympathetic, and unselfish. Her helpful and competent nature made her popular, in school and later in life.

Phila married William Moore, the son of Philip Moore, neighbor and farmer. Together settled at Cobbleskill County, NY, but later moved to Montgomery County where they farmed and built wealth.

Phila's birth year is in question.

• Per the 1850 census, she was born in 1797^[1]
• Per the 1855 Census, she was born in 1795^[2]
• Recorded in a text on The Original Town of Concord, she was born on March 12, 1795^[3].
• In 1880, she was born in 1792^[4]
• Her Find a Grave, has her birth at 1791, Photos of the headstone are posted and the date on Find A grave is based on her "age"

on the headstone at death^[5]

Based on her parent's births, the 1797 date may be the closest to reality. Also, based on a son, Ambrose, born in 1817, that would make her 20 at the birth of her first son. Her youngest son, born in 1838, that would make her 41 at his birth.

Conflicting evidence

Source date supplied by the US Census Reports gives dates of 1797, 1795, and 1792. The weakly or unsourced Concord text and website gives March 12 1795, and March 12, 1795.

Summary and conclusion.

The US Census reports conflict on the birth date of Phila, range of five years. Two publications, though not linked to primary sources, give a precise date. These are only considered as “experts” conclusions about the primary data.

How these birth dates support known maternity should be considered. Elizabeth, Phila's mother, reportedly married in March of 1794, so the 1792 seems unlikely as Elizabeth would have to become pregnant before marriage at the age of 11 or 12 (Census 1880). If Elizabeth became pregnant soon after marriage, as was the normal custom, the birth date of Phila in 1795 is likely (Census 1855). The 1797 date also is possible (Census 1850).

It is known that the person who actually responds to the Census may not know for certainty some of the biographic data so Census dates given often vary. The 1880 Census gives an unlikely date so is rejected. The 1855 is the most detailed. Moreover, the addition data (County of state of birth) matched known data. For this reason, this report considers this Census most likely to be accurate.

The conclusion of this report diverges from the above view of my learned colleague, and accepts the middling date, 1795 (from 1855 Census, and selected by other “experts”). This report supports inserting that date into the profile and and marking it at uncertain.
