Biography

Edward was born in 1872 at Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia. He was the son of John Writer and Isabella McLellan. [1]

Edward passed away in 1896 at Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia. [2]

DEATH OF WRITER The unfortunate man, Edward Writer, was so severely injured at Blayney Railway Station on Friday, as narrated in the Free Press on that day, died in the Bathurst Hospital yesterday morning. Deceased bore the amputation well, and if that had been the only injury it would be probable he would have recovered; but gangrene set in in the right thigh, which also had been greatly shattered, and he succumbed as stated. Every possible attention was paid to the injured man by Dr Edmunds, who had the case in charge, and the Hospital staff. This morning an inquest on the body at the Court House, before a coroner and the jury. Evidence was given by deceased's sister, Nurse Writer, as to his admission to the Hospital and his death. Patrick Joseph Bergen, guard on the Railway, deposed : On Friday morning at half past 1 o'clock I was in charge of No. 14 goods train, Orange to Bathurst; at Blayney we pulled up; deceased was taking out two brake vans to put on my train; two brake vans had been taken off the train, and the night officer sent it forward so that the other vans could be put on; as I moved back again I heard the deceased say "Whoa"; it being dark at the time I could not see any one, but gave the danger signal to the driver and before we had gone another yard stopped the train; on going to the deceased I found his right thigh was fast between the sand pipe and the wheel. His left leg, which had a compound fracture, was free, and his body was laying in the " 6 foot "; deceased said to me "My God Joe, I am done, the sand pipe has got me fast" Being a member of the Ambulance Corps I got him free and did all I could to assist him and we placed him on a stretcher, and he was sent to the Hospital at Bathurst ; deceased was performing his duty at the time. Dr Griffiths of Blayney was called immediately after the accident ; do not know how he came to fall and get caught in the sand pipe. After hearing corroborative evidence, the jury returned the following verdict :- That deceased died from the effect of injuries accidently received, no blame being attachable to anyone. Bathurst Free Press and Mining Journal (NSW) Nov 16 1896. [3]

He is interred at Bathurst Cemetery, Catholic Sec Row 3, New South Wales, Australia.
