Biography

Samuel Wroth baptized 15 Nov 1789 at Modbury, son of Samuel. Samuel married Sarah Irene White on 29 Nov 1811 ay Modbury. They had one child before Sarah died in August 1817 at Modbury.

Samuel married secondly Mary Hodder 17 March 1819 at Ugborough. In 1841 Samuel 50 was a yeoman at Fleeny Court, Bigbury with Mary 40, Samuel 25, Servington Hodder Worth 20 a maltster, William 15, John 15, Walter 15, Jane Hodder Wroth 10, Charles 7, Mary Hodder Wroth 5, Edward Wroth 3, and six servants. In 1851 Samuel 61 was a farmer of 450 acres employing 17 men and 4 work boys and 2 women and 6 household servants. He was farming at Court, Bigbury and living there in 1851 with wife Mary 52, John 27, Henry 23, Jane 20, Charles 17, Mary 15, Edward 13, and six servants. In 1861 Samuel Wroth 71 born at Modbury, was a farmer of 300 acres, living at Court House or Court Barton in Bigbury with wife Mary 63 born at Ugborough, Henry 33, Charles 27, Jane 29 and Edward 23, all born at Bigbury, and four servants. In 1871 Samuel Wroth 80 was a retired farmer living at 22 Church street, Modbury with daughter Jane H Wroth 39 and three servants. Samuel died 28 May 1871. [MI] . “Deaths. Wroth. Issue, all baptized at Bigbury: Servington Hodder 15 Dec 1819, William 7 Nov 1821, John 20 Aug 1823, Samuel 1 June 1825, Henry 30 May 1827, Elizabeth 8 April 1829, Jane Hodder 2 March 1831, Charles 30 July 1833, Mary Hodder 7 Oct 1835 and Edward 21 Sept 1837. Four died unmarried: Servington in 1847, Mary H in 1852, William in 1854 and Henry in 1866.
