DEATH NOTICE. WYLLIE.—On the 22nd October, at Adelaide, Rev. Humphrey Herbert (Rector of Robe), beloved husband of Philippa Wylie, and fourth son of the late Col. R. Wyllie, H.E.I.C.S. At rest.
OBITUARY. THE LATE REV. H.H. WYLLIE. First Anglican Priest at Renmark. The Rev. Humphrey. H. Wyllie, whose illness was mentioned in this paper last week and whose death occurred in Adelaide last Saturday in his 65th year, will be remembered by all of Renmark's early settlers as the first priest-in-charge of the Renmark Church of England mission, and as a pioneer settler of place. The son of a former military secretary to the Governor of India, and connected by many ties with British military tradition, he started life as a teaplanter in India. But a visit to Canada, where he subsequently married, resulted in his becoming a theological student in the Huron College and his ordination as a priest in 1882. He was for some time curate of Christ Church, Dresden, and later incumbent of St. George's Clarksburg, both being in the province of Ontario, In 1885-6 he was curate of Little Bowden, Northants, and incumbent of St. Columba's Church, Lonmay, in the diocese of Aberdeen. Mr. Wyllie came to Renmark in 1891, taking up a fruit block on the outskirts of the settlement—in the 28th Street, at the rear of the "Cedars," the residence for so many years of Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Wyllie—which was afterwards owned by "Admiral"
Henderson; For seven years, until his departure from the district in 1898, he was in charge of the mission which afterwards developed into St. Augustine's church, During this period he took a robust interest in the civic life of the place and was chairman of the first committee elected to administrate the affairs of the Renmark Hotel. After leaving Renmark, Mr. Wyllie acted as locum tenens at Prospect for a time and was for ten years in charge of the parish of Strathalbyn. Since 1909 he had been rector of St. Peter's at Robe, in the South East. Mr. Wyllie was undergoing treatment in
sanatorium in North Adelaide but it was only within ten days or so of his death that his condition was known to be critical. Mesdames E. O. Gooden, Norwood, J. B. Ogilvy and R. S. . Phillips of Renmark, and Mrs. Jack Hocking, Woods Point, are daughters of the late Mr. Wyllie, and with their mother were with their father before his death. There are no other members of the family living. Messrs. F. S. Wyllie, formerly of Renmark and now of
Adelaide, and W. V. Wyllie of Renmark are brothers of the deceased. A memorial service at St. Augustine's will be conducted by Archdeacon Busseil next Sunday.
