Clarissa was 15 when her older sister Fanny married William Price and moved to Standardsville. Clarissa took Fanny's place , assisting her mother with the management of the household and care of the slaves. She was thus well prepared to become the mistress of "Midway," the Rodes estate.[2]
At the age of 25, Clarissa married William Harris Rodes on February 2, 1827, in Rockingham County, Virginia, when he was 25.[3] They had seven children - Mary Frances, Thomas Layton, Elizabeth Dabney, Sarah Adeline, Francina Clarissa, John William, and Maria Louisa.[2][1]
In 1830, the couple lived in Albemarle County, Virginia.[4][5] In 1850, the couple and six children were farming in Albemarle County, Virginia, along with 35 slaves.[6][7] Their real estate was valued at $15,000, and they appear to have two farms comprised of 1250 improved acres and around 500 unimproved.[8] In 1860, the family farmed in Albemarle County, Virginia, along with 37 slaves, with real property of $42,000 and personal property of $33,000.[9][10]
In August 1865, William received a presidential pardon as provided for by the amnesty proclamation, once he had sworn his allegiance.[11] In 1870, William and Clarissa and their son John and his family were farmers in Fredericksville, Albemarle, Virginia, with real estate valued at $24,000 and personal property around $2,000.[12] In 1880, the couple lived with their son John and family in Whitehall, Albemarle, Virginia.[13]
Clarissa died on December 5, 1882, in Albemarle County, Virginia, at the age of 81, eight months after the death of her husband.[14][15] She was buried at Midway Farm Cemetery in Millington, Albemarle, Virginia.[16]
