Biography

Charlotte was born about 1820. Charlotte Yarberry married Bazwell Justice (abt.1807-) in 1839 in Carter County, Tennesssee^[1].

1850 Census

By 1850, Bazwell and Charlotte are living separately in Carter County, as Bazwell lives with his sister Sarah.^[2] Charlotte appears twice in the 1850 census: in Carter County near Bazwell^[3], and in Cocke County near her brother.^[4]

Move to Georgia

Sometime after 1850, Charlotte moves to Sevier County where she meets and apparently has an affair with William Riley (Flynn) Flinn (1810-1888).

In July 1860, William Flynn appears as head of household with his wife and children in Sevier County.^[5] A few weeks later in August 1860, William R. Flinn and Charlotte appear in the 1860 Cobb County GA census together.^[6] "Chalota" appears with her son Moses and his son Samuel P. Flynn as the "Flinn" household.

Death

Charlotte does not appear in future census records, so it is assumed she died in Georgia. By 1865, William Flynn has married someone else.

Research

Charlotte lived near James Yarberry (abt.1817-abt.1884) in 1850, so he may be her brother, and she may be the daughter of William Roland Yarberry (1799-1877).

The 1850 census appears to have been taken late in Cocke County, based on the ages reported. The Carter Co census is dated Oct 9 and reports these names:

According to family history, in March 1860, the Grand Jury Circuit Court of Sevier County TN returned a bill of indictment against William R Flinn and Lotty Justice for lewdness. A copy of this record hasn't been found.
