++BORN in Knox County, Illinois, John Yates married Miss Jenny Collins, Jan. 12, 1878. Of this union the son was born. The wife and mother lived but one and one-half years after the marriage. Mr. Yates came to Iowa in 1879 and was united in marriage to Delilah A. Molesworth at Oskaloosa April 13, 1881. They removed to Swan, Iowa in 1884 and again to Curlew in 1891, and from there to Humboldt, their present home, in Dec. 1901. Mr. Yates has always enjoyed excellent health until the last few weeks, during which time he complained of feeling ill. No alarming symptoms were noticed but means were taken to restore health, but to no purpose. The fatal malady had already begun to work and the end was drawing near. Thursday evening, April 24, he became seriously ill, was unconscious and remained so until the last. His tired heart grew still Saturday evening at 9:15 o'clock. "God's finger touched him and he slept." But we do not mourn as those who have no hope for we remember the words of one mightier than death who said, "Whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die." Our departed brother was a devoted Christian, a member of the Methodist Church and was true to his convictions of right and wrong. His religion was of the everyday kind and was a part of his life and it kept him even tempered and helpful at all times. He had no peculiarities of faith or singularities of practice and was ever ready to reach out a helping hand to a needy fellow traveller. He was very sympathetic, large hearted, a loyal citizen, a kind neighbor, a loving husband and father, and so continued until he heard Heaven's roll call and answered to his name. A favorite of his in life is strikingly fitting in his death, "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God." A wife, son and daughter and a host of friends mourn his departure. We commend these sorrowing ones to the God of all comfort and grace who has said, "I will never leave them nor forsake." "In my Father's house are many mansions." "I go to prepare a place for you." "Where I am, there ye may be also." "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord." Mr. Yates was buried from the Methodist Church in this city April 17th, 1902.
