Biography

Ruth was born about 1808 ^[1]. Her parents were John Smith Yates Sr. (1764-1832) and Courtney (Deal) Yates (abt.1762-1862).

She was married twice:

1. She married John Vance Lester (abt.1809-abt.1863) in Kentucky in 1830 ^[2]. John and Ruth divorced in 1850 ^[3]. Their children:
   1. Mary Polly Lester (1861-1911) ^[4]
   2. William Lester ^{[5] [6]}
2. She married Robert Shortridge in June 1850 ^{[7] [8]}. They had at least one child, Smith Shortridge, born 1850 ^[9]. In 1860, Robert and Ruth resided in Buchanan, Virginia with their son Smith and Robert's children from a previous marriage ^[9].

She passed away in 1870 and was laid to rest in the Looney Creek Cemetery in Grundy, Buchanan County, Virginia ^[1].Transcribed from her bio on Find a Grave:

"Ruth Yates Shortridge was born in 1806 to John Smith Yates and Courtney Deel Yates in Buchanan County Virginia. She married August 25, 1830, to 1. John V Lester and had at least 2 children. They divorced.

She married 2. Robert Shortridge on June 4, 1850. They had 8 children: Elijah born 1836; Nancy Virginia born 1840; Arminta Jane born 1842; Simeon "Sam" (aka Simon) born 1846; John James; Cynthia; Betsy; and Smith Shortridge.

She died 1870 and was buried in Looney Creek Cemetety, Buchanan County Virginia."
