Russell adopted Susie's daughter Carol Hillick from her first marriage prior to her starting school in 1955.
Russell served in the US Army during the Korean War and spent about a year in Korea.
Russell wrote this piece in 2003 - just some of his thoughts:
I could never write a book, the words they from me flee. How can I ever tell them? How can I make them see? Sometimes I think I'm going around again to the places I've already been. Then there is the sounds no one else can hear. The voices of those long gone - still ringing in my ear! Things like this and even more - are how it is for me! So how can I expect of you - or anyone to see!
On May 2, 2005 - Russell recounted the following story of his youth to this compiler: At time he let me make a copy of the receipt for the fine he paid for this incident.
In August 1946 while home on an 18 day leave from the army - Russell and several of his friends had been to the Elm Tree Inn in McLean, New York and returned to Homer, NY and went to a diner late at night. They had all been drinking and in today's time would have been ticketed for DWI. While at the diner this group of young men hatched a plan to ring the church bells at the Episcopal church in Homer, NY. They did so at about 2:30 a.m. - they started to leave the church and saw the state police coming - the young men ran behind a house on Cayuga Street in Homer and jumped the fence and then went up James street - they split up . The police fired at them an later the group found "Birdshot" in boards where they were running. Two of the group went back down and started walking on Main Street where they were arrested. About 10 the next morning - police knocked on door of William Street home and told the young men to be in court at a certain date and time. The young men all went to court and each paid a fine of $5.00 for disorderly conduct. The men involved in this story are - Charles Peacock, Harold Peacock, "Lefty" Mott, Norman Young, Russell Young, and "Steve" Milton Stevens. Dad, Don and I chuckled as Dad told this story.
8/11/2005 - we had a scare with dad today - he was in a great deal of pain & having some breathing difficulties. - he has an abdominal aortic anneurism and lung cancer (metasticized). We were able to get hospice care set up today- additional pain medications and oxygen set up for him. His vitals were good this am when Don and I arrived - 124/83 - pulse 76. After the hospice set up - Gail Grummins - our hospise nurse said she did not see anything eminent - but that we did the right thing in getting things set up and in motion so we can keep dad as comfortable as possible as he really wants to stay at home. Dad is at peace and got to talk with all his grandchildren today except for my step (how I hate that word) children Donald and Rebecca Riccardi - we have talked with Becky and are working on getting her up this weekend - we have been unable to reach Donald as he was not at home when we stopped in. I have placed a call to him as well, but no answer.
This compiler was very fortunate to have been adopted by Russell Young when he married my mother. We may not have had material things - but we were blessed with a wealth of love and knowledge bestowed on us throughout the years. I was also blessed with a very loving extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins. The memories throughout my youth bring nothing but joy and smiles to my face as I think of family gatherings and reunions.
