Mary Jane Bennet Young was born on the 14th April 1850 and baptised on the 19th May 1850 in the parish of St. Ann, on Commercial Road, Limehouse, in London's Docklands. Her father was William Bennet, a carpenter and her mother's name was Maria. The address they gave was 2 Canton Street, East India Road, in Poplar's old Chinese quarter.
