Biography

Margaret was born about 1760. She is the daughter of THOMAS YOUNG and MARGARET. THOMAS was first documented in Christ Church Parish in Georgia before removing to to Charles Town, South Carolina.

According to her father's will, MARGARET was married to a STOCK. THOMAS YOUNG of the PARISH of St. George Dorchester wrote his Last Will and Testament on 12 Dec 1789, and named daughter, MARGARET STOCK, as one of the legatees.[1]

JOHN STOCK of South Carolina, Planter wrote his Last Will and Testament on 22 May 1784, and noted these legatees:

wife MARGARET STOCK...son THOMAS STOCK...son JOHN STOCK...child which my said wife appears to be now pregnant...personal estate divided into four equal parts or shares...wife MARGARET STOCK...remaining three fourth parts unto my sons THOMAS & JOHN STOCK...wife Margaret shall have liberty to live and reside either in my plantation in St. Bartholomew's Parish Colleton County or in Charleston...Uncle JOHN RIVERS...mother ANN HUTCHINSON...in case of her death...equally divided amongst JOHN and MARY HOLMAN, children of JOHN & MARY HOLMAN of St. Andre'w Parish & to MARY, WILLIAM, THOMAS & JEAN SMITH, children of THOMAS SMITH of St. Paul's Parish & my sisters in law MARY & ELIZABETH YOUNG...appoint wife MARGARET STOCK as long as she remains my widow, and no longer, Executrix together with my friends THOMAS HUTCHINSON Junior, CHARLES SKIRVING & THOMAS OSBORNE Esqrs. Planter Executors...22 May 1784...presence of JOHN PYPER, BENJAMIN PERRIMAN, RICHARD ESTES[2]

The willl was proved 13 Sept 1784 with MARGARET STOCK and CHARLES SKIRVING qualifying as Executrix & Executor.

The 1790 Census for St. Phillips and St. Michaels, Charleston, South Carolina enumerated the household of MARGARET STOCK with one male under 16, three females, and nine slaves.[3]

On 20th day of August 1797, MARGARET YOUNG relict and Devisee of THOMAS YOUNG deceased and MARGARET STOCK, JANE SMITH, ELIZABETH THOMPSON, MARY MAZYCK and STEPHEN MAZYCK Junr her husband sold to ARCHIBALD McKERN 694 acres in the Parish of Saint George, Charleston District.[4]

She passed away about 1836. MARGARET STOCK of "Chyhaw", widow wrote her Last Will and Testament on 30th of Nov 1830, and noted ...whole of my estate to daughter ANN STOCK SMTIH...after her decease to her daughters MARGARET SMITH and ANN BURG SMITH..appointing daughter ANN STOCK SMITH and my friend SIMON MAGWOOD of Charleston Esquire Executors.[5] She also made a codicil to the will stating, Whole of Estate unto my daughter ANN STOCK SMITH absolutely and exclusively. The will and codicil was proved 31 March 1836, and on 24 Sept 1836 Mrs. ANN STOCK SMITH qualified as Executrix.
